Prof. Hulya Ermis-Demirtas Earns NEIU Research Award

The NEIU Committee on Organized Research (COR), in collaboration with the Office of the Provost and the Advisory Committee on Faculty Awards, has awarded $4000 to Hulya Ermis-Demirtas, Assistant Professor of Counselor Education in the Goodwin College of Education. With the help of this award, effective June 2023, Dr. Ermis-Demirtas will collaborate with others to offer an art-based intervention to a group of socio-economically disadvantaged Chicago Public School students to promote their resilience and wellbeing.

Program Aide Needed at Neighborhood Boys and Girls Club

The Neighborhood Boys & Girls Club of Chicago is currently looking to grow its workforce that is  dedicated to helping push the mission "​To enhance the well-being and develop the potential of our club members, their families, and the community." 

Specifically, Neighborhood Boys & Girls Club is looking to hire for an Out of School Program Aide position. We currently have 3 out of school programs, two of them onsite at Bateman and Cleveland Elementary and one at our clubhouse. We will be launching a new onsite program at Linne Elementary in February 2023. 

A lot of our current Out of School Program Aides are college students. They normally work from 2:45 pm -6:30 pm Monday - Friday. This schedule allows them to attend their classes during the day and put in some work hours in the evening. 

We are completely independent from other Boys and Girls Clubs of Chicago and America and have been serving the North Center and surrounding communities for over 90 years.

McNair Scholarship Accepting Applications Until Nov. 30

 The Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) McNair Scholars Program invites applicants to apply for Cohort 21. The program seeks students who are current Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors who are considering going to graduate school. The McNair program will prepare students for graduate studies by providing them with the following opportunities: 

  • Paid research experience ($2,800 stipend)
  • Customized academic advising and career planning
  • Faculty mentorship
  • Sponsored travel to research conferences, and other networking opportunities
  • Assistance in the graduate application process

We invite you to apply to the McNair Scholars Program if you meet the following criteria:

  • First-generation and low-income college student
  •                       OR
  • A member of an underrepresented group in graduate education
  • Sophomore (completed at least 48 credit hours), Junior (completed at least 60 credit hours), or Senior graduating no earlier than December 2023
  • A cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher (4.0)
  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident

The application is now open and will be accepting applications until November 30th, 2022 at 11:59 pm. Being named a McNair Scholar is both an honor and responsibility, as there are no more than 15 scholars selected for the program each year. Dr. Wheeler Finalist for Audrey Reynolds Distinguished Teacher Award

It gives me great pleasure to share that Dr. Durene Wheeler, Professor of Educational Inquiry and Curriculum Studies, as well as African and African American Studies, is a finalist for the 2023 Audrey Reynolds Distinguished Teaching Award. The other finalists are:

Summer Research Applications Due Dec. 12

 I am pleased to announce that Northeastern Illinois University will continue its Summer Research Stipend Program for Summer 2023. The University will fund at least four stipends of $5,000 each. Additional awards may be made, pending the availability of funds.

The Summer Research Stipend Program supports scholarly research during the First-Half and Full Summer sessions, and may be awarded to faculty in any academic discipline or for interdisciplinary work.

Applications and supporting materials must be submitted to the Google form linked above by Monday, Dec. 12, 2022. Award recipients will be announced by Friday, Feb. 24, 2023.

Health Insurance Options for Students: Nov. 3 and Dec. 13

 Please spread the word that uninsured students and their family members can schedule an appointment with Hamdard Health certified application experts to review options to apply for health insurance, including applying for insurance under the Affordable Care Act. 

These free open enrollment events will take place on the Main campus in Building E (across from the Welcome Deskin in the former bookstore space) TOMORROW! Thursday, Nov. 3 and Tuesday, Dec. 13 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Walk-ins are welcome; however, without an appointment there may be a wait time or you may be asked to schedule an appointment.

Nominations for Diversity Awards Due Dec. 5

The President’s Inclusive Excellence and Diversity Award Committee invites students, employees and alumni to submit nominations for the annual President’s Inclusive Excellence Awards to honor students, faculty, staff and alumni for significant achievements in advancing the University’s goals in the areas of equity, diversity and inclusion. Nominations are due by 11:59 p.m. on Monday December 5th, 2022. 

Nominee Categories and Eligibility Requirements

  • Faculty, including instructors, tenured and tenure-track (must be currently employed at NEIU)

  • Non-faculty staff, (must be currently employed at NEIU)

  • Students, including undergraduate and graduate (must be currently enrolled at NEIU)

  • Alumni (must have obtained an official degree from NEIU)

Nomination Requirements:

To nominate yourself or someone else, please upload the following documents to this google form no later than 11:59 p.m. on Monday December 5, 2022.   

1.  Nominator's Statement:  The nominator must submit a supportive statement of the individual’s accomplishments and evidence of success in equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI). The more detailed the statement, the more competitive your submission will be. Statements should be no less than 500 words, double spaced at 12 point font, and no more than 750 words. The supporting statement should address the following questions:

    a. What EDI activities, practices, initiatives, and/or organizations has the nominee participated in? 

    b.  How has the nominee demonstrated longevity,  consistency, breadth, depth, courage, leadership, and/or creativity in these EDI practices?

    c.  What has been the impact of the nominee's EDI practices (within NEIU and/or abroad)?

2.  One letter of support (in addition to the nominator’s statement): The additional letter of support should address the selection criteria for this award (see questions to be answered in the nominator’s statement). The more detailed the statement, the more competitive your submission will be. Letters of support should be no less than 500 words, double spaced at 12 point font, and no more than 750 words

3.  Documents of Support [this is optional, but highly recommended for alumni]: Nominators may also upload documents related to equity, diversity and inclusion activities (resume, curriculum vitae, significant projects, website links) that will help the committee understand and assess the nominee’s accomplishments as described in the nominator’s statement and the letter of support. 

Selection of Award Recipients

  • The President’s Inclusive Excellence Award selections will be based on an exemplary commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion, as expressed through research and creative programming, teaching, mentoring, or curriculum transformation, professional service, and/or a combination of achievements in these areas.

  • The awards will be based on service, broadly defined, which may include service to NEIU, the local community and/or abroad (alumnus).

  • The awards will be based on an accumulated record of achievement in equity, diversity & inclusion, acts of services, projects, or events to build meaningful lives and vibrant communities.

To nominate yourself or a fellow NEIU community member for this award, please complete and submit the nomination form by 11:59 p.m. December 5, 2022.
