Program Aide Needed at Neighborhood Boys and Girls Club

The Neighborhood Boys & Girls Club of Chicago is currently looking to grow its workforce that is  dedicated to helping push the mission "​To enhance the well-being and develop the potential of our club members, their families, and the community." 

Specifically, Neighborhood Boys & Girls Club is looking to hire for an Out of School Program Aide position. We currently have 3 out of school programs, two of them onsite at Bateman and Cleveland Elementary and one at our clubhouse. We will be launching a new onsite program at Linne Elementary in February 2023. 

A lot of our current Out of School Program Aides are college students. They normally work from 2:45 pm -6:30 pm Monday - Friday. This schedule allows them to attend their classes during the day and put in some work hours in the evening. 

We are completely independent from other Boys and Girls Clubs of Chicago and America and have been serving the North Center and surrounding communities for over 90 years.

McNair Scholarship Accepting Applications Until Nov. 30

 The Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) McNair Scholars Program invites applicants to apply for Cohort 21. The program seeks students who are current Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors who are considering going to graduate school. The McNair program will prepare students for graduate studies by providing them with the following opportunities: 

• Paid research experience ($2,800 stipend)
• Customized academic advising and career planning
• Faculty mentorship
• Sponsored travel to research conferences, and other networking opportunities
• Assistance in the graduate application process

We invite you to apply to the McNair Scholars Program if you meet the following criteria:

• First-generation and low-income college student
•                       OR
• A member of an underrepresented group in graduate education
• Sophomore (completed at least 48 credit hours), Junior (completed at least 60 credit hours), or Senior graduating no earlier than December 2023
• A cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher (4.0)
• U.S. citizen or permanent resident

Dr. Wheeler Finalist for Audrey Reynolds Distinguished Teacher Award

Summer Research Applications Due Dec. 12

 I am pleased to announce that Northeastern Illinois University will continue its Summer Research Stipend Program for Summer 2023. The University will fund at least four stipends of $5,000 each. Additional awards may be made, pending the availability of funds.

The Summer Research Stipend Program supports scholarly research during the First-Half and Full Summer sessions, and may be awarded to faculty in any academic discipline or for interdisciplinary work.

If you are interested in the program, please review and complete the Summer Research Stipend Program guidelines, instructions and application. 

Applications and supporting materials must be submitted to the Google form linked above by Monday, Dec. 12, 2022. Award recipients will be announced by Friday, Feb. 24, 2023.

Health Insurance Options for Students: Nov. 3 and Dec. 13

Nominee Categories and Eligibility Requirements

• Faculty, including instructors, tenured and tenure-track (must be currently employed at NEIU)

• Non-faculty staff, (must be currently employed at NEIU)

• Students, including undergraduate and graduate (must be currently enrolled at NEIU)

Prison + Neighborhood Arts Project Commencement Ceremony

Northeastern Illinois University and the Prison + Neighborhood Arts Project (P+NAP) held a Commencement ceremony at Stateville Correctional Center on Oct. 15 for their cohort of five students who graduated through the University Without Walls (UWW) program. 

Highlights of the ceremony for Darnell Maurice Lane, Michael James Bell, Juan A. Luna, Reginald Terrell BoClair and Daniel Edward Perkins included an address by poet and scholar Fred Moten and a performance by Chance the Rapper. 

Professor of Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies and Educational Inquiry and Curriculum Studies and P+NAP Director of University Curriculum Erica Meiners said each of the graduates worked incredibly hard to earn their degrees. 

“Nothing is ever done alone,  and this celebration reflects the strength of our community,” Meiners said. “Getting an education, let alone earning a degree while incarcerated during a pandemic, is no easy feat. I am thrilled to celebrate these students who overcame the odds and to showcase the excellence of the wider P+NAP community.”

Dec. 2022 Commencement Volunteers Needed

The NEIU Commencement Committee is seeking volunteers to assist during December 2022 Commencement, which is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 11 at the Credit Union 1 Arena, 525 S. Racine Ave.

If you are able to volunteer, please sign up by completing the December 2022 Commencement Volunteer Form by Nov. 21. Training will be provided on the Main Campus prior to the event. 

Volunteers are needed for many areas, including:

• Set up (e.g., placing programs on seats)
• Check-in (e.g., passing out radios to employees who need them)
• Back of house (e.g., directing students to where they need to go for line-up)

Dec. 6 Graduate Degree Hooding Ceremony

We would like to extend an invitation to students and faculty to attend the Fall 2022 Master's Hooding Ceremony on Tuesday, December 6, 2022 at 7:00 pm. The Hooding Ceremony will be held in the Northeastern Illinois University Auditorium for the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business and Technology, and the Daniel L. Faculty intending to represent their program in the platform party on stage are required to attend in regalia. If you don’t have your own regalia, please indicate that on the RSVP form to reserve a set of generic regalia in NEIU colors.  The Jacob H. Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies (CCICS) is honored to host a Community Conversations book talk with Associate Professor of Educational Inquiry and Curriculum Studies and author Dr. Sunni Ali-Howard as he talks about his new book “An American Love Story: Islam and the Black Experience” from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28 at CCICS in the lower level conference room.

Grading Open for First Half of Fall 2022 Classes

 Online grade submission in NEIUport is now open for the First Half of Fall 2022 classes and will end by 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, October 23rd.

 

Please review your courses in the NEIUport Faculty Grade Assignment channel to ensure that you are able to access your grade rosters.  If you are not able to log into NEIUport, please contact the Help Desk at helpdesk@neiu.edu.  For other grading questions or issues, please contact the Registrar’s Office for assistance by emailing registrar@neiu.edu.

 

Incomplete Grades

If you assign an incomplete grade to a student, you will see the date on which the student’s grade will become an “F” if the outstanding work is not completed per the Incomplete Grade policy.  You may input an earlier completion date if desired.  The Incomplete Grade policy is available by clicking here.   Additional information is available in the “Online Grade Submission Instructions” document in the Frequently Used Job Aids channel on the Faculty tab in NEIUport.

 

Grade Information

• A listing of all grades and their descriptions is available on the Registrar Services page for your reference
• NAF/RNAF grade: A student who never attended your class should be assigned the NAF or RNAF (Never Attended-Failure) grade
• UWF/RUWF grade: A student who registered for your course, attended/was active at least one day of the course but who did not drop the class should be assigned the UWF or RUWF (Unofficial Withdrawal-Failure) grade along with providing the last date of attendance/activity

 

Other Helpful Information

• Grades entered via D2L’s Grades tool are not official.  Official grades must be recorded via the Faculty Grade Assignment Channel in NEIUport.
• A step-by-step grading instructions document (titled “Online Grade Submission Instructions”) is available in the Frequently Used Job Aids channel on the Faculty tab in NEIUport.
• If a student is attending your class but his/her name does not appear on your final grade roster, the student is not registered.  Please email the Registration Office (registration@neiu.edu), along with having the student emailing the Registration Office.
• Grades submitted after the grading deadline can create difficulties for students who need those grades to proceed with their academic plan.  Processes that can be affected include determining: a) which students did not receive passing grades in prerequisite courses, b) those students who repeated classes, c) academic standing changes, d) continued financial aid eligibility, and e) continued eligibility to live in student housing.

Nov. 10 Career Development Fair

 NEIU Career Development will host an all-campus career and internship fair on Thursday, November 10 from 12 pm to 4 pm.  It will be in Alumni Hall.  

All students are invited to attend!  In addition to exploring career and internship opportunities, it is a wonderful chance for underclass students to learn more about possible careers and talk with professionals.  We will provide students with questions that they can ask employers to make networking a bit easier.

I am pleased to invite nominations for the annual Bernard J. Brommel Distinguished Research Professor Award.

This award was established through a gift from Dr. Bernard J. Brommel, Professor Emeritus, Communication, Media and Theatre. The recipient of the award shall be a tenured/tenure-track member of our faculty who best demonstrates excellence in research and scholarship.

The award is intended to reward established research by faculty members who have a record of success, and to encourage other faculty, especially young and new faculty members, to produce a significant body of work.

 Niles West AVID is looking for college students and recent college grads to work as tutors with the Niles West AVID program.  We are hoping you can help get the word out. The hours are 8:00AM - 2:00PM, Tuesday and Thursday. The pay is $15/hour. The position is also posted on Handshake.

The AVID tutor takes an active part in developing the academic and personal strength of AVID students by: 

• Facilitating Socratic study groups twice a week

• Coaching students in organization and time-management skills 

• Serving as a role model/mentor to AVID students

On Feb. 18, 2021, Dr. Cooper helped make history when the Mars Perseverance Rover successfully landed on the Red Planet. Part of the famed Jet Propulsion Laboratory team, Dr. Cooper inspires others with her love of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics), her personal journey and the obstacles she overcame, and her fascinating tales of what it’s like to be a real-life guardian of the galaxy. She also shares how important it is for people from diverse backgrounds to become the next generation of leaders in the fields of science and technology.

The award is given annually to the tenured member of Northeastern’s faculty who best demonstrates distinguished teaching—innovation, high standards and a positive impact on students at the University. Each year, the recipient of the award gives a presentation to our Northeastern community.

Building an Equity-Minded Syllabus Workshop Stipend Initiative

 The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) supports faculty who are committed to student learning and retention. As part of this effort, CTL has in development various professional development opportunities aligned with enhancing equitable and inclusive learning environments. The first offering of the 2022-2023 academic year is "Building an Equity-Minded Syllabus" workshop. This workshop takes place  on Friday, October 21 (10:00 a.m. -3:00 p.m.). Participants may attend in person or via Zoom.

The purpose of this workshop is to transform an existing course syllabus to align with the equity-based practices established by the Center for Urban Education (CUE). These practices increase the likelihood of increasing student retention. 

Faculty who participate in the workshop activities and submit for review a transformed syllabus  will earn a stipend of $350.00. This opportunity is limited to 16 tenure/tenure track and/or full time instructors. This includes chairs and program coordinators. Please see this Registration Form.
